Galvanized Hardware Cloth - Technical Information

Galvanized hardware cloth is economical for industrial, agricultural and some residential uses. These meshes are first woven or welded from steel wire and then dipped in a bath of molten zinc. This heavy zinc coating is also called galvanizing, serves to protect the mesh from corrosion, and stabilizes the crossover points of the wires, which makes them non-raveling.

The 1-inch mesh (1 mesh), the 2 mesh, and 4 mesh .025 inch is electrically welded before its galvanizing bath. Our 3 mesh, heavy 4 mesh .035 and 5 mesh and 8 mesh are woven (one over, one under pattern) before galvanizing. To help explain mesh, here is a guide to the somewhat confusing terminology commonly used.

• 1 mesh is also called 1 inch mesh.
  The wires are one inch apart, center-to-center.
• 2 mesh is also called 1/2 inch mesh.
  The wires are one half inch inches apart, center-to-center.
• 3 mesh has wires that are 1/3 of an inch apart center to center.
• 4 mesh is also called 1/4 inch mesh.
  The wires are one quarter inch apart, center-to-center.
• 5 mesh has wires that are 1/5 of an inch apart center to center
• 8 mesh is also called 1/8 inch mesh.
  The wires are 1/8 inch apart, center-to-center.

The mesh is sold in 100-foot rolls. The standard widths are 24, 36, and 48 inches wide. We also produce and stock standard narrow widths: 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 12 inches wide by 100 feet long. We can also produce continuous 300-foot lengths.

Custom widths up to 72 inches wide are available for orders of 50 rolls or more.

Galvanized Hardware Cloth - Choosing

In general, our website gives detailed descriptions and pictures of galvanized hardware cloth meshes. For someone unfamiliar with wire mesh terminology, 2 mesh has two wires in each direction in a square inch. You could easily pass a pencil through the openings.

Galvanized hardware cloth mesh is a stiff material but may be bent by hand and has little spring back after being bent or formed. All of the meshes maybe folded completely over without breaking.

In an outdoor environment, the lifespan could be as little as six months to one year at the seashore and from 20 years and up in desert conditions. The lifetime of galvanized is hard to predict and depends on air quality, atmospheric humidity, the type of materials, chemicals or soils with which it is in contact. If longevity and a clean appearance are top priorities, you should consider a woven or welded stainless steel mesh.

The color of galvanized mesh starts as a shiny silver. Overtime the color will become a dull gray with white powdery corrosion.

Galvanized Hardware Cloth - Cutting

Galvanized meshes are easily cut with hand tools. A common scissor can be used to cut the 8 mesh. All other galvanized meshes will require tin snips. TWP has a minimum order of $150 for custom cut galvanized hardware cloth wire mesh discs, rectangles, shallow cups and custom slit ribbons.

Due to slight irregularities in the spacing of the wires, it is normal for rectangles to be supplied with either flush cut edges or an exact size with random sheared edges. In other words, if you specify an exact size, the cut edge will often fall between two wires.
